 2,89

Beer brewery de Koningshoeven is the first in the world to launch a completely alcohol-free Trappist beer: La Trappe Nillis (0.0%). The beer is the result of a unique interplay between tradition and innovation. It is brewed according to authentic recipe, using sustainable raw materials and energy sources. Part of the proceeds go to projects developed by the friars of the Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven in Uganda.

With the increasing demand for alcohol-free beer, Bierbrouwerij de Koningshoeven developed a unique answer with La Trappe Nillis: a completely alcohol-free Trappist beer that makes no concessions to the distinctive quality of La Trappe. In addition, Abdij Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven is celebrating 140 years, giving the introduction of this beer a golden edge to its long history.

Pleasantly bitter with caramel sweet finish

La Trappe Nillis is dark, amber in color with an off-white head. The accessible alcohol-free Trappist beer has a pleasant bitterness and a round malty, caramel-sweet finish. The aroma of malt and caramel blends with the fresh and fruity aromas produced by the yeast and hops.

The symbolism of the name Nillis

The name "Nillis" is derived from the Latin Nihil (nothing) and Nullus (none). With that, La Trappe Nillis also does justice in name to what it is: 0.0% alcohol and traditionally 100% La Trappe. But there is another meaning that makes "Nillis" a fitting name. "It is a corruption of Nilus, which refers to the river Nile," says Brother Isaac, the prior of Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven. He was closely involved in the development of the non-alcoholic beer. "The Nile rises in Uganda, where we as a Trappist community have a daughter house, Our Lady of Victoria. The name of this new beer thus also symbolizes our connection to that country."

0.0% alcohol, 100% tradition

In honor of the abbey's 140th anniversary, the label features a QR code to scan that leads to a historical timeline where the richness of the history of beer brewing and the community of Abbey of Our Lady of Koningshoeven can be experienced.

'La Trappe Nillis helps increase future opportunities'

The friars not only have a daughter house in Uganda, they are also developing several sustainable construction projects there to boost health care and education. For example, they had an outpost of the Kyotera Hospital built in the town of Ssanje and renovated two elementary school. Most recent project: the construction of a brand new secondary school. Brother Isaac: "We want to spend the proceeds of La Trappe Nillis mainly on the Agriculture & Animal Husbandry department of the secondary school. This department will soon offer children, complete with practical field and livestock, the opportunity to take their first steps in the agricultural sector. How they can make this their future and contribute to the local economy. Important in a country where the opportunities are not there for the taking."
